Headline: Retail Sales May 2005 - More hard pounding
Description: Retail sales in the UK in May fell 2.4% on a like-for-like basis, and rose by 1.4% on a total basis, compared with a year ago.

The three-month trend rate of growth fell in May to -1.5% from -0.9% in April for like-for-like sales, and to 2.1% from 2.6% for total sales.

May showed little change from April's tough trading, after excluding the downward distortion from this year's earlier Easter. The few warmer days helped sales for some but many resorted to discounts and sales days to attract customers.

Consumer caution and the slowing housing market continued to hit sales of big-ticket and household items. Some smaller ‘treat' and ‘pampering' products were popular, as purchasers try to lift the gloom.
