EDUCATION
Liceo Scientifico “Michelangelo, Cagliari: High School Diploma, 1988 (Diploma di Maturità Scientifica).
Università degli studi di Cagliari: degree in Chemical Engineering, 1995, first class honours (110/110 con lode).
I studied for 6 months in London (April-September 1994) at the Imperial College, Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology, Centre for Process System Engineering for my degree thesis: “Quantification and minimization of environmental impact of chemical processes.
The purpose of the work was to apply the basic features of a methodology for environmental impact minimization, based on a life cycle assessment. The case study involved the vinyl chloride monomer production process.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES

EniChem (now Syndial, owned by ENI), Cagliari factory
I worked from 1997 to 2000 as a process engineer in the Chlorine-Soda Plant (electrolysis with membrane technology, monopolar and bipolar cells; triple effect evaporation plant of caustic soda, production and emergency plant of sodium hypochlorite).
My main tasks were the DCS implementation for the cells room and the revamping of the brine superpurification section. As a process engineer I was involved in several studies aimed at process improvements, costs optimization and environmental issues, with emission of job orders.
It was also my job to support the production managers in the solution of the routine problems of the production plant (maintenance, quality problems, revision of manuals and operating instruction, etc.)
I worked from 2000 to 2002 as a process engineer in the Xylenes (metaxylene by acid extraction, ortoxylene and ethylbenzene by distillation, paraxylene by crystallization) Semiregenerative Reforming and Pseudocumene (distillation) Plants.
My duties involved mainly some improvements related to heat recovery projects in the SR Reforming and Pseudocumene Plants.
It was also my task also to draft variable costs and to propose budget capacities of the plants. As in my previous experience, I was involved in the support of the production managers in the solution of routine problems of the plant, in several studies aimed at process improvements, costs optimization and environmental issues, with emission of several job orders.

May 1997-October 1997: EniChem Factory owned by ENI, Porto Marghera. I took part in the working team EniChem/SnamProgetti (engineering firm)
The purpose of the team was to find suitable technical solution for the recovery and treatment of rainwaters and separation of cooling waters from process waters, as required by an Italian decree, aimed at the preservation of the Venice lagoon.
The basic design was developed for the plants of the Factory:

Polimeri Europa (owned by ENI), Cagliari factory
I have been working in the Health, Safety and Environment Department since July 2002 as HSE Technology manager: having been trained for performing internal audit, I know all the main topics and EU directives (origin of many Italian laws) concerning health, safety and environment.
My main responsabilites involve several HSE aspects:
 major hazards analyses with production of the safety report according to Seveso Directive
 complying with Integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC) Directive
 emissions in air (analyses planning, data verification according to local authorization, based on the bubble approach)
 water discharges (analyses planning, data verification according to local authorization)
 wastes disposal management
 remediation of contaminated land
 PCBs, asbestos, industrial hygiene and others minor HSE themes.
The HSE problems are usually tackled by multidisciplinary teams involving Production, Maintenance, etc.
I have got the qualification for performing ISO 14000 internal audit (October 2000): the factory which I have been working for is certified according to ISO 14000 and OHSAS 18000.
